A Milky Way crash course

May 22nd, 2007 by Freewheelin

It’s pretty common knowledge that our sun - Sol - is going to shit itself in about 5 billion years. ..in a galaxy, far far away...

That’s a pretty long time to wait for a spectacular stellar event.

There’s an even bigger show that will be on before that one though, and it involves more than just our little ball of hot stuff.

In a mere 2 billion years, our galaxy - The Milky Way - will crash right into Andromeda - the closest galaxy to us.

Sadly, the crash will be pretty tame, with scientists suggesting that there will be no star on star action because of the immense distances in between them.

It’s not even going to rip our solar system apart, which seems pretty weak. We should, however, get some meteor or comet action coming our way, since it should be able to at least disrupt the Oort cloud enough to liven things up.

Sciencemag.org have the story.
